From the iron block to the finished scythe
English – 5 Forge / forge fire / Fireplace / flame furnace / forge / forge fire:
A fireproof trough, usually made of firebrick or iron, in which charcoal was burned.
Fuel: Charcoal was used exclusively for scythe production. Charcoal had the advantage that
that it contained little sulphur, which improved the quality of the iron.
Air supply (blower): A manual or mechanical blower provided the necessary oxygen supply and increased the temperature.
In the fire, the briquettes are heated to “bright cherry red”. From here, the blade is cut to the length of a scythe.
The coal boys started at 11 o‘clock in the night so that the work of scythe cutting could begin at 3 o’clock in the morning.
