English – 18 Hardening trough
The copper hardening trough was filled with molten beef tallow. At the edge of the trough there was a horizontally arranged iron plate, the “scouring plate”, for placing the scythes on and nearby a large water grinder and a box of sawdust, which was used to clean the hardened scythes of the last remnants of the adhering fat.
The scythe blade had to show an even yellow glow over the entire surface. As soon as a scythe had reached this state, it was pulled out of the fire with very long tongs and dipped, back first, into the melted beef dregs of the hardening trough.
The scythe was considered a sign of good quality steel if the scale had been removed as completely as possible, “poured off” well and therefore had a uniform light grey color.
